Before the visit
Ask for the exact version, mileage, service records, known faults and reason for sale. Request recent photos of the interior, bodywork and instrument panel. Confirm that the person selling can provide the ownership documents. Write down anything missing from the advertisement so you can ask about it once, clearly, rather than relying on memory.
Bring a comparison sheet
Use one page per car with spaces for price, year, mileage, tyres, service evidence and upcoming work. Check that the vehicle identification number on the car matches the documents you are shown. During the viewing and test drive
Arrange to view the car in daylight and ask whether it can be started from cold. Record warning lights, unusual noises, uneven tyre wear and equipment that does not work. Try the seating, luggage space and parking visibility that matter to your daily use. For an electric car, ask for a battery health report and a demonstration of charging.
Before making a commitment
Ask an independent professional for a written condition report and an estimate for work identified. Compare the total of asking price and expected work with other cars on your shortlist.
