Understand the IEA's electric car market figures: 2025 sales, 2026 projections and how to separate global statistics from local buying decisions.
Keep the reporting period attached
These figures come from the IEA's Global EV Outlook 2026, published on 20 May 2026, and were checked on 10 September 2026. Cite the source and period together whenever sharing a number. A forecast remains a forecast even when the year in its title is the current year. Do not turn it into an observed full-year result.
Sales share is not the fleet on the road
A share of new sales and a share of all vehicles are different measurements. Imagine a town with 10,000 existing cars and 100 new purchases: the composition of those purchases does not describe the whole town's fleet. Keep geography, vehicle category and time period visible in any comparison or chart. Combining unmatched measures can produce an appealing but misleading headline.
How to use market news as a buyer
Treat global growth as a prompt for questions, not proof that a specific model is right for you. Ask a seller about local servicing, replacement parts, charging compatibility and warranty support. A car popular elsewhere may have a different specification in your market. Save the local price quote alongside the exact version and the date it was issued.
