Morocco's Major Airports — Arrival Tips & Car Rental Guide
Practical guide to Morocco's 5 main airports: CMN, RAK, AGA, FEZ and TNG — rental desk locations, peak wait times, road connections and tips to save money.
Morocco has eleven commercial airports, but five handle the overwhelming majority of international arrivals and are the country's main car rental hubs. Each one has a different layout, a different relationship between on-airport and off-airport rental desks, and a different road network waiting for you on the other side of the exit. Knowing what to expect before you land saves time, money, and the confusion of an unfamiliar arrival hall.
Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) — the main gateway: With over 10 million international passengers annually, CMN is Morocco's busiest airport, located 30 km southeast of Casablanca city centre. Car rental desks for the major international and national agencies are located in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1; a few smaller agencies operate from the adjacent multi-storey car park. Expect longer queues during peak European holiday periods — July, August, Christmas and Easter. Booking in advance through a platform like HaveKar and opting for a local agency typically saves 20–35% over walk-up counter pricing. The motorway network from CMN is excellent: the A3 takes you directly into Casablanca (30 min), the A7 links to Marrakech (~240 km, 2.5 hours), and the A1 goes north toward Rabat and Tangier.
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) — the tourist hub: RAK is Morocco's second busiest international airport, positioned just 6 km from the edge of the medina. The arrivals hall is well organised with a dedicated rental desk row. During peak season — March to May and June to August — expect pickup waits of 45 to 60 minutes due to high demand from tourist flights from Europe. One important detail: confirm whether your chosen rental agency has a desk inside the terminal building or requires a shuttle to an off-airport car park. Off-airport agencies are almost always 15–25% cheaper but add 10 to 15 minutes to your pickup. Once on the road, the Palmeraie ring road (Route de la Palmeraie) provides quick access east toward the Atlas, while the Route de l'Ourika leads south toward Oukaïmeden and the Tizi n'Tichka pass road.
Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA) — the beach and south gateway: AGA is located 25 km northeast of Agadir city centre in Ait Melloul. International charter and low-cost flights from Spain, France, Germany and the UK dominate the schedule. Rental desks are located in the arrivals hall and availability is generally good outside of summer peak. The N1 coastal road south from Agadir toward Tiznit and Sidi Ifni is excellent and runs alongside the Atlantic — one of Morocco's most pleasant drives. The coastal road north toward Essaouira (175 km, around 2.5 hours) is equally scenic. For inland routes toward Taroudant or the Anti-Atlas, the N10 is well maintained but secondary roads become rougher — a crossover is preferable over a basic city car.
Fes-Saiss Airport (FEZ) — gateway to the imperial heartland: FEZ is a compact, manageable airport located 15 km south of the Fes medina, with a 20-minute drive to the city walls. Fewer agencies operate from here compared to Casablanca and Marrakech, and car availability can be tight during Ramadan, national holidays, and the peak cultural tourism season (spring and autumn). Book well in advance. Fes is an ideal road trip starting point: the N6 motorway runs west toward Meknes (60 km), Rabat (200 km), and Casablanca (300 km); the N8 and N13 lead east and south toward the Ziz Valley, Midelt, and Merzouga; and the N2 north takes you through the Rif mountains toward Chefchaouen (200 km) and Tetouan.
Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG) — the northern entry point: TNG serves travelers arriving by air from Europe and is also important for those crossing by ferry from the Spanish ports of Algeciras, Tarifa, or Barcelona into Tanger-Med port (35 km east). Car rental options at TNG are more limited than in the south — book ahead and expect a narrower selection of agencies. The airport is 15 km southwest of the city centre. The A1 motorway from Tangier to Casablanca via Rabat is Morocco's premier driving corridor, fast and well-lit. Tangier is the natural base for exploring the northern region: Chefchaouen is 110 km inland on the N2 through cedar and pine forest; Tetouan is 60 km east; and the Mediterranean coast road toward Al Hoceima is one of Morocco's most dramatic clifftop drives.
General tips that apply to every airport: Always book your rental car in advance, especially for arrival at peak periods — walk-up availability at the counter is rarely cheaper and often unavailable entirely. Photograph the rental car thoroughly at pickup before leaving the car park, in natural light, covering every panel, rim and the windscreen. Confirm the fuel policy in writing before you drive away — full-to-full (you return it full) is standard and fair; full-to-empty (agency provides a full tank and you return it empty) sounds convenient but is always overpriced per litre. Keep the rental contract, the agency's direct phone number, and your insurance documents stored somewhere accessible during the trip — not only in your email inbox.
